Time To Put the Pollard Case to Rest—by Demanding He Be Set Free

A newly clear aspect of the case reveals evidence of a deeper injustice—which must now be addressed

It should be ever more difficult for patriotic Jewish Americans—or anyone else, for that matter—to believe that Jonathan Pollard, who has spent 29 years in prison for passing secret intelligence documents to Israel, is being punished for the very real crime [1] to which he pleaded guilty in 1986. Pollard, a former naval intelligence analyst, has spent nearly three decades in prison for a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years under current U.S. law—more time than any other convicted spy in American history. He is the only person in American history to receive a life sentence for the crime of spying in a case involving a friendly country, and the only person convicted of such a crime to be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.
And what you are about to read is not a knee-jerk, tribalist defense of Pollard—you will be subjected to no whining about his health, no assertions about how serving time in a maximum security prison is hard, or the like—but is rather an argument about a newly clear and deeply problematic aspect of the case.
In an op-ed [2] published this week in the New York Times, M.E. Bowman, former deputy general counsel for national security law at the FBI and coordinator of the investigation that put Pollard behind bars, did his best to revive the idea that the spy deserved his extreme sentence and should remain in prison. Yet the logic of Bowman’s argument is so tenuous, and so noxious, that it only magnifies the perception that Pollard was railroaded by an American national security establishment animated by a very personal animus towards one particular spy—and one that has spent the past three decades trying to cover up its own failures.
According to Bowman, Pollard pleaded guilty to a statute that deals with the disclosure of information that might result in the death of a U.S. agent or that “directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information.” The suggestion that passing satellite photos or communications intelligence to a friendly country is a crime on a par with causing the death of a U.S. agent in the field defies common sense. But that is because Bowman’s confusion is quite deliberate—and revealing, as is his suggestion, based on an allegation [3] made by Seymour Hersh in 1999 that Israel traded information it obtained from Pollard to the Soviet Union in exchange for “Jewish emigrĂ©s.” If Pollard didn’t actually kill anyone or harm America directly, the innuendo goes, then Israel must have—in deadly collusion with America’s then-worst enemy.
Behind Bowman’s dark farrago of half-baked rumors and theories it is possible to glimpse the real basis of the sealed case that he and his associates presented in court. At the time that Pollard was convicted of passing satellite and communications intelligence to Israel, a string of American agents in the former Soviet Union was in fact discovered by the KGB, and they were shot dead. Bowman and the rest of the national security establishment believed that Pollard and the Israelis were somehow responsible—because Pollard was the only spy they knew of within the American national security establishment. Maybe, the theory went, in addition to passing information about Iraq and ships in the Mediterranean Sea to the Israelis, Pollard was somehow able to access the names of American agents inside the Soviet Union and pass them to the Israelis, who in turn passed them to the Russians in exchange for facilitating Soviet Jewish immigration to Israel.
The main problem with this theory is that we have known for a fact since the mid-1990s that it is false. Jonathan Pollard was not the mole who passed the names of American agents to the Soviet Union in the 1980s. In fact, the Soviet Union had two high-ranking moles in the American national security apparatus working simultaneously to pass along huge quantities of information about American spies and spying techniques. The first was Bowman’s superior on the FBI organizational chart, Robert Hanssen. In 1987, the year that Pollard was convicted, Hanssen was put in charge of discovering why American agents were being blown at such an alarming rate. Needless to say, Hanssen didn’t identify himself as a mole—or let Bowman and his colleagues in the FBI’s legal department in on his secret. The second Soviet agent was Aldrich Ames, a CIA legacy case and counter-intelligence specialist who, in 1985, began passing information to the Soviets that led to the apprehension and execution of at least 10 American agents, including Dmitri Polyakov, a general in the Soviet armed forces who had functioned as an American double-agent for 20 years.
It is unclear why the Times saw fit to publish Bowman’s disjointed exercise in late-in-life personal and organizational ass-covering, or why Bowman believes that he can get away with publishing such trash in the guise of doing further service to his country. Yet it is also true that the ins and outs of Pollard’s crimes, his sentencing, and his motivations, and what he did or did not pass to the Israelis, have long ago ceased to matter—especially to the people who are keeping him in prison. Rather, Pollard’s continued incarceration appears, at this point in time, to be intended as a statement that dual loyalty on the part of American Jews is a real threat to America—and a warning to the American Jewish community as a whole.
But why do Jews need such a warning? In a country where no one drinks from separate water fountains and same-sex marriage is legal, the idea that American Jews are uniquely susceptible to the lures of serving two masters at once—and therefore need an extra-stiff dose of public deterrence to keep from selling out their fellow Americans—is as silly as it is vicious. In order to cover their own incredibly damaging mistakes and failures, the national security establishment is keeping Pollard in prison on the apparent grounds that Jews are especially prone to disloyalty. The fact that American Jews are afraid to answer this entirely self-interested slur against our entire community makes us—all of us—a target for political bullying by people who believe, or find profit in suggesting, that we have something to hide. It is time for the American Jewish community to put the Pollard case to rest—not by letting him rot in prison, but by standing up against a real injustice whose perpetuation is clearly intended to suggest that all American Jews are, inherently, potential traitors to their country.
***
Although it is painful to assert such an obvious fact in 2014, the notion that American Jews have an extra-special motivation to act as secret agents for the Israeli government has no basis in the historical record—which shows that spies of all races, genders, and creeds are motivated by ideology, money, ethnic ties, the promise of sex and adventure, and almost every other reason under the sun. Traitors and spies come in all flavors: White Anglo-Saxon Protestant [4], Catholic [5], Chinese [6],Muslim [7], Cuban [8]. The list goes on. Since treason, like most crime, is an equal-opportunity employer, singling out any national, ethnic, or religious group as especially susceptible to disloyalty is an obvious violation of both American law and basic common sense. [9]
Sadly, however, there are plenty of people in America, as well as the rest of the world, who strongly disagree with the characterization of American Jews, or Jews in general, as being no more and no less likely to turn on their country and sell out their neighbors. The common and proper term for such beliefs is “anti-Semitism.” Allowing the American national security establishment to play on classic anti-Semitic stereotypes in order to keep a man in prison as a “lesson” to other members of his group or race is contrary to both the spirit and the letter of the U.S. Constitution—and would surely and rightly never be tolerated by Muslims, gays, blacks, Chinese-Americans, or any other group.
American Jews may want to ignore the intended message of the Pollard case—that we are second-class citizens because of our inherent political untrustworthiness—but there is ample evidence that America’s enemies around the world have by now received that message, loud and clear: American Jews can be dealt with differently than other Americans, and with fewer consequences, even if they are directly employed by the American government. Ask the Iranians why they felt like they could seize former FBI Agent Robert Levinson—recently revealed [10] to have gone to Iran under contract with the CIA—with impunity and continue to obfuscate about his whereabouts, even as they have sought to negotiate an end to sanctions with the Obama Administration. Ask the Cubans why they feel like they can continue to hold [11] USAID contractor Alan Gross whilelobbying [12] for increasing trade ties. Ask the members of the Pakistani intelligence service, the ISI, who clearly know, or could find out, the whereabouts [13] of longtime USAID contractor Warren Weinstein. They do it, because they know that they can get away with it. They do it, because America does it, too.
Putting a target on the backs of American Jews who serve their country in dangerous places is a terrible way to treat U.S. government contractors and employees—whether they are Jewish or not. Telling America’s enemies that, when it comes to questions of national security, Jews are different makes all Americans vulnerable, by sending the signal that America is a country that won’t protect its own.
But if the official injustice of the Pollard case is dangerous for all Americans who serve their country, it has also metastasized into a real threat to the promise of legal and social equality that American Jews now take for granted. It is not hard to imagine why the heads of the Jewish Federations of North America, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, and other name-brand Jewish organizations have ignored the message that Pollard’s outsized punishment is intended to convey—which is that political anti-Semitism is OK in America or at least to be expected. After all, no one wants to be associated with a convicted traitor who pleaded guilty to betraying his country—let alone be outspoken in his defense, or turn him into a symbol of an entire community.
Yet by framing their obligatory annual engagement with the Pollard case as a strictly humanitarian issue, even American Jewish leaders who have been forthright about the case—most especially Malcolm Hoenlein, the longstanding executive director of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations—have given an unwitting stamp of communal acquiescence to the message of suspicion that Pollard’s punishment is intended to convey. The business-as-usual attitude of the American Jewish leadership has legitimized a noxious brand of political anti-Semitism, which has been adopted by parts of the U.S. political establishment—as well as by journalists and academics who help to frame discussions of public policy. The injustice that is being done to Pollard pales next to this very deliberate injustice being done to American Jews by high-ranking U.S. government officials in Pollard’s name.
Israel’s recent flurry of concern for Pollard, after years of denying that he was actually an Israeli spy, hasn’t been helpful, either. In recent weeks, Secretary of State John Kerry has reportedly offered to arrange for Pollard’s release in exchange for concessions from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in settlement negotiations with the Palestinians. But the idea, now more than 15 years old, that Pollard is a legitimate bargaining chip in Middle Eastern affairs does neither Pollard nor American Jews any favors. Rather, it illustrates the advanced state of moral and intellectual decay into which the organized American Jewish community has sunk. The intended message of Pollard’s continued incarceration is that all American Jews are potential Jonathan Pollards. Are you? Is it right for the U.S. government to see—and present—us this way? As Americans, and as Jews, this is an ugly message that threatens our most deeply held attachments and beliefs.

NEW IRAN AGREEMENT INCLUDES SECRET SIDE DEAL, TEHRAN OFFICIAL SAYS From what seems to be going on we just lost the entire ballgame.

NEW IRAN AGREEMENT INCLUDES SECRET SIDE DEAL, TEHRAN OFFICIAL SAYS From what seems to be going on we just lost the entire ballgame.

NEW IRAN AGREEMENT INCLUDES SECRET SIDE DEAL, TEHRAN OFFICIAL SAYS

 Paul Richter       January 13, 2014,

WASHINGTON – Key elements of a new nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers are contained in an informal, 30-page text not yet publicly acknowledged by Western officials, Iran’s chief negotiator said Monday.
Abbas Araqchi disclosed the existence of the document in a Persian-language interview with the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency.
The new agreement, announced over the weekend, sets out a timetable for how Iran and the six nations, led by the United States, will implement a deal reached in November that is aimed at restraining Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

When officials from Iran and the world powers announced that they had completed the implementing agreement, they didn’t release the text of the deal, nor did they acknowledge the existence of an informal addendum.
In the interview, Araqchi referred to the side agreement using the English word “nonpaper,” a diplomatic term used for an informal side agreement that doesn’t have to be disclosed publicly.
The nonpaper deals with such important details as the operation of a joint commission to oversee how the deal is implemented and Iran’s right to continue nuclear research and development during the next several months, he said.
Araqchi described the joint commission as an influential body that will have authority to decide disputes. U.S. officials have described it as a discussion forum rather than a venue for arbitrating major disputes.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday that the text of the implementing agreement would be released to lawmakers. He said the six parties were weighing how much of the text they could release publicly.
Asked late Monday about the existence of the informal nonpaper, White House officials referred the question to theState Department. A State Department comment wasn’t immediately available.
[Updated 8:45 p.m. Jan. 13: A State Department spokeswoman, Marie Harf, denied later Monday that there was any secret agreement.
"Any documentation associated with implementation tracks completely with what we've described," she said. "These are technical plans submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency," the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency.
"We will make information available to Congress and the public as it becomes available," Harf said.]
Ray Takeyh, an Iran specialist at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Iran and the other six countries may have written the nonpaper to record understandings that they didn’t want to release publicly. The governments may plan to release “just a short text, with broad principles and broad strokes,” Takeyh said.
The Nov. 24 deal between Iran and the six powers – the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany -- aims to freeze Iran’s nuclear progress for six months. During that period, the two sides will try to negotiate a longer-term deal aimed at ensuring that Tehran’s nuclear program remains peaceful. The agreement has come under fire in Iran and the United States from critics who contend it is harmful to their side.
In his interview, Araqchi touched on the sensitive issue of how much latitude Iran will have to continue its nuclear research and development.
U.S. officials said Sunday that Iran would be allowed to continue existing research and development projects and with pencil-and-paper design work, but not to advance research with new projects. Araqchi, however, implied that the program would have wide latitude.
“No facility will be closed; enrichment will continue, and qualitative and nuclear research will be expanded,” he said. “All research into a new generation of centrifuges will continue.”
The research and development issue has been an important one for many U.S. lawmakers, who fear that Iran will try to forge ahead with its nuclear program while the negotiations are underway. At an administration briefing for senators Monday, members of both parties raised concerns about the centrifuge research issue, aides said.
President Obama on Monday again hailed the implementing agreement and appealed to Congress not to impose new sanctions on Iran, for fear of driving the country from the bargaining table.
"My preference is for peace and diplomacy, and this is one of the reasons why I've sent the message to Congress that now is not the time for us to impose new sanctions; now is the time for us to allow the diplomats and technical experts to do their work,” Obama said. "What we want to do is give diplomacy a chance and give peace a chance."

An Open Letter to Secretary of State John Kerry Posted By Isi Leibler On January 8, 2014

An Open Letter to Secretary of State John Kerry
Posted By Isi Leibler On January 8, 2014 @ 8:25 pm
Dear Mr. Secretary,
Over the next week or so, you will be unveiling a US proposal for a “framework agreement” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority as a prelude to a final status arrangement.
Before you do so, I encourage you to realistically consider the issues that gravely concern most Israelis, and to believe wholeheartedly that Israelis genuinely yearn for peace and will overwhelmingly endorse a plan that separates them from the Palestinians, provided their security is ensured.
Unfortunately, Mr. Secretary, you and the administration you represent are operating on premises that are misguided or false. President Obama has deluded himself into believing that this conflict is essentially about real estate, an idea that has been disproved many times, most clearly when Palestinian Presidents Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas rebuffed Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert’s offers to relinquish 95% of the territories formerly occupied by Jordan.
As befits a mediator, you have lavished praise on President Abbas and the Palestinian Authority, and repeatedly stated that both parties are willing to make sacrifices to achieve peace. But alas, this assertion repeated endlessly by all parties including Israelis, is simply false and contributes towards the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ environment surrounding this issue which suppresses reality.
Dismissing political correctness the fact is that our “peace partner” is a corrupt authoritarian regime that brutally suppresses dissent. Over the years, the Palestinians’ corrupt officials have diverted a substantial portion of billions of dollars of international aid to private, offshore accounts. This corrupt entity could collapse at any time, and the constitutional term of office of its President has long expired.
Our “peace partner” is indisputably committed to the elimination of Jewish sovereignty in the region. That is why Palestinian leaders so adamantly refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. President Abbas even denies that the Jewish people have a biblical or historical link to the land.
Our “peace partner” continuously assures its adherents that Israel’s destruction is inevitable. President Abbas has learned that he can better work toward this goal by exerting duplicitous diplomatic pressure on Israel than by engaging in terrorism. Through this deceitful diplomacy, he is attempting to dismantle Israel in stages, a strategy the majority in his government openly supports. Indeed, in the unlikely event that President Abbas finalizes an agreement that waives additional claims and pronounces the end of the dispute, there is little doubt that he will be assassinated.
I urge you, Mr. Secretary, to face the harsh reality that by American and Western standards, through intense propaganda, the Palestinians have engineered what can only be defined as a criminal society. All sectors of Palestinian society—the government, religious networks, the media, the educational system-–engage in brainwashing the Palestinian people, from kindergarten-age up, into regarding Israelis as  demonic monsters and sanctifying fanatic Islamic suicide bombers and terrorists as martyrs. Just last week, your colleague, the official Palestinian spokesman, Saeb Erekat, whipped up fervor by accusing Israel of having murdered Yasser Arafat and speculating that we would kill President Abbas.
Mr. Secretary, can you imagine an American government making peace with a neighboring government that provides salaries from humanitarian funds for incarcerated murderers of American citizens, and pensions to their families? Would Americans approve their government negotiating with a neighbor whose leader personally embraced and hailed as national heroes those convicted of barbarically murdering American civilians? Would Americans contemplate making peace with a neighbor who imposes the death penalty on citizens who sell land to Americans?
Bear in mind, Mr. Secretary, that nearly half of Palestine is comprised of “Hamastan,” the genocidal, Islamic fundamentalist entity that occupies the Gaza strip and from which missiles against our cities are still being launched. Were it not for an Israeli military presence in the area, Hamas already would have wrested control of other areas currently under Palestinian Authority control. Hamas remains dedicated to the destruction of Israel, and sanctions the murder of Jews everywhere. Hamas’ Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Zahar, recently proclaimed that “any deal inked between the Palestinian Authority and Israel would be non-binding for the Palestinian people.”
Mr. Secretary, you have put pressure on us to make outrageous concessions under absurd conditions. You have forced our hand in releasing mass murderers in order to “induce” a hostile neighbor to agree to commence negotiations. Can you morally justify freeing terrorists convicted of killing women and children? Could you visualize the response of Americans to an outside party who pressured their government to act in this manner?
Mr. Secretary, during your numerous visits to the region, you have insisted that you would never be party to a policy that undermines Israel’s long-term security. But this is precisely what you are proposing.
You do not take any account of the unpleasant reality that our “partner”, the corrupt PA could collapse or be taken over by Hamas any time should the IDF totally withdraw from the area.
But setting that aside Mr. Secretary, you are now suggesting that more sophisticated technology combined with an international, possibly American force, replace the IDF in sensitive areas.
Israel has never asked America or any other country to fight on its behalf. We are profoundly conscious of the fact that we can rely only upon ourselves in the event of military attack. It is inconceivable for us to contemplate sub-contracting any aspect of our security to a third party, including the US.
Nor can technological advances alone protect our borders. While UN Resolution 242 implicitly provides for secure, defensible borders, adherence to the1949 armistice lines, which give Israel a mere nine- to fifteen-mile wide waistline, will place future generations at peril. And it is imperative that we retain depth and an IDF presence in the Jordan Valley. These border issues are absolutely fundamental to Israel’s security.
In addition, Mr. Secretary, I find it difficult to comprehend your knee-jerk responses to housing construction for Israeli citizens in Israel’s capital and areas over the Green Line that will always remain part of Israel. This issue appears to weigh more heavily on your mind than the carnage and sectarian violence taking place throughout the Mideast region with hundreds of thousands of people brutally killed in within Syria which borders us.
The Oslo Accords never precluded settlement construction. And whilst Israelis are divided over construction in isolated settlements in disputed areas, they are pained that our American ally contributes to the global hysteria around this issue – even when the construction in question is taking place in Jerusalem’s Jewish suburbs.
Many long-standing friends of the US currently believe that the Obama administration has contributed to our regional chaos. Many of your staunchest Arab allies have lost faith in you. We pray that we may be wrong, but to us and many others, the US gamble with Iran appears an impending disaster.
I respectfully suggest, Mr. Secretary, that you pause before advising Israel on what is in her best interest. (Imagine where we would be today had Israel shared your optimism about Syrian President Bashar Assad and taken your advice to cede the Golan Heights.)
Israel’s relationship and friendship with the US is profound and based on genuine shared values. We are also deeply reliant on American military and diplomatic support, and greatly appreciate that the military aid provided by the Obama administration has exceeded that of its predecessors.
But we believe that the American people understand that Israel cannot afford to continue to make unilateral concessions, to accept the Palestinians’ stubborn refusal to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state, to accede to their unrelenting demand for the right of return, or to compromise on long-term security issues.
Mr. Secretary, please do not attempt to score an unattainable foreign policy achievement. In the absence of Palestinian concessions on critical issues, a solution simply is not possible and should your initiatives undermine Israeli security, you will leave a legacy as the US Secretary of State who abandoned the one and only genuine democracy and US ally in the Middle East.
We hope that you will concentrate on seeking interim solutions, encouraging mutual economic projects to improve Palestinian living standards and maintaining the channels for dialogue so that progress can be achieved should a more accommodating Palestinian leadership emerge.
I urge you to set aside conventional political correctness to appreciate that our concerns are for the lives of our children and grandchildren, the future of our nation. I pray that you will contribute to our realization of the biblical vision of Prophet Isaiah, and enable Israelis and Palestinians to set aside their weapons, and work together for the social and economic betterment of all inhabitants of the region.

OBAMA STILL HOPES TO COME OUT OF THIS NUCLEAR BRINKMANSHIP SMELLING LIKE A ROSE, AND IF THE WORLDWIDE MEDIA KEEP COVERING UP THE FACTS, HE MIGHT STILL DO SO.  BUT ALL THE DOMINOS HAVE TO FALL THE RIGHT WAY, AND IN THE NEWLY "ORGANIZED" MIDDLE EAST, THE CHANCES OF THAT HAPPENING ARE SLIM TO NONE.
 James Lewis 1-11-14

Genocidal hate propaganda is back in the world, though it's never reported in the American and European media.  To report the constant stream of hate agitation against the West and Israel would undermine the socialist-Islamist alliance that apparently has run the world since Arab oil embargo of 1973.

On the web, MEMRI.org is a scholarly source of translations of daily hate agitation among the hundreds of millions of people who speak Arabic, Urdu, and Persian (Farsi).  They are constantly drenched in ugly racial and cultural hatred.

One part of that hate industry is paid for by Sunni Muslims like the Saudis and the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.  Independently, the Iranian Shi'ites run both agit-prop and influence-buying operations in Europe and the United States.  In Italy the neo-fascist Five Star Movement dances to the tune played by the mullahs of Iran.

It now seems that modern jihadist warfare against the West started with the Arab oil embargo of 1973.  As Thomas Lifson has hinted in these pages, the Western green movements rose to tremendous power in countries like Germany about the same time.  Contrary to liberal delusions, oil powers and green politicians like Al Gore have huge common interests in blocking domestic energy production.  Lock down US oil production, and the Gulf Arabs and Iranians will control the price of oil from the biggest spigot in the world.  By squeezing the oil supply, greens and oil dictocrats have been buying political and media power since 1973.  By 1979, Jimmy Carter signaled American surrender to one of the biggest Gulf oil producers, the Iranian regime run by the medieval reactionary regime of  Ayatollah Khomeini.

Those nice folks are now within months or so of obtaining nuclear weapons, any time they decide to sprint to the finish.  With that sword hanging over our heads, President Obama, who has failed to act against Iran's nuclear development for five years, is now conducting "peace" negotiations combining the US, Russia, the EU and Iran.  The first product of that gang of political thieves and robbers has been an open surrender to Iran's nuclear and great power ambitions.

In other words, over the last five years Obama has lied and lied about America's intentions to block Iranian nukes, assuring the world that the martyrdom ideology of Iran would never be allowed to get the ultimate weapon of genocide.  It now seems that Obama has deliberately facilitated Iran's nukes with the aim of coercing Israel to withdraw to its 1948 ceasefire lines.  Which is where things stand right now.

THE ENORMOUS RISK OF OBAMA'S BRINKMANSHIP IS THAT IRAN IS INHERENTLY IRRATIONAL IN NUCLEAR TERMS, CONSTANTLY INDOCTRINATING ITS CHILDREN IN THE VIRTUES OF MARTYRDOM IN WAR.  NORMAL NUCLEAR POWERS EVOLVE TOWARD STABILITY, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SUICIDAL.  BUT A SUICIDE-WORSHIPPING REGIME LIKE IMPERIAL JAPAN WOULD HAVE HAD NO INHIBITIONS ABOUT USING NUKES IN A SELF-DESTRUCTIVE GĂ–TTERDĂ„MERUNG.  HITLER IN HIS BUNKER WOULD HAVE USED NUKES.  SUICIDAL CULT LEADERS LIKE JIM JONES WOULD USE NUKES.  AND MARTYRDOM-PREACHING MULLAHS MIGHT DO SO AS WELL.  BY PROTECTING IRAN'S NUCLEAR DEVELOPMENT OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS, OBAMA IS THEREFORE JUGGLING WITH LIVE GRENADES.

Try dancing on a tightrope with nukes at stake and chances are dangerously high that somebody will fall off.  Since Israel is in possession of a reported 200 well-developed nukes, if it is driven to the last extreme it can go nuclear in a matter of minutes.   The same point applies to Russia, which could flatten the Iranian nuke industry in a few weeks by conventional arms alone.  Russia could also secretly facilitate an Israeli strike, as France did in the case of Saddam Hussein's nuclear plant Osirak in 1981.

Obama likes to play double games, but the Russians are past masters at it.  So are the Saudis and Iranians.  This is the highest-stakes nuclear poker game since the death of Josef Stalin.

Which brings us back to the poisoned stream of hate propaganda that the Saudis, Muslim Brothers, and Iranians have been pumping out to rouse their own populations plus the Western left since 1973.  The hate campaign has rebounded against the Saudis and Egyptians -- the Sunni axis -- because its worst enemy, Iran, is now able to make nukes in a few score days.  The poisoned arrows they have been launching against Israel and the West have now rebounded against them.

The Saudis are now seeing their biggest enemy of the last 1,400 years gaining nukes as a result of all that hate propaganda.  It's not Israel but Iran that threatens Saudi family control over the Arabian Peninsula and its black gold.  Iran is the biggest Shi'ite power, just as the Saudi-Egyptian axis is the biggest Sunni power in the Middle East.  Egypt can provide the military manpower that Saudi Arabia needs.  The Saudis therefore desperately need Egypt, and Egypt needs Saudi money because it can't grow enough food for its people.  The Saudis therefore use their oil billions to support Egypt, and the Egyptian army guarantees Saudi safety against the Shi'ite heresy, only fifty miles away from Saudi Arabia, across the Gulf.

Enter Obama, who presented his Epistle to the Muslims from Al Azhar University in Egypt five years ago, promising a pro-Muslim American policy and damn the consequences.  But there is no single Muslim world.  Islam is split into a thousand factions, from giant sectarian divisions like the Sunnis and Shi'ites, down to ancient vendettas between tribes and families.

Four Muslim societies are now in the breakdown phase: Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Libya.  They are splintered in a Hobbesian war of all against all.

Other Muslim regimes are teetering on their brink.  Saudi Arabia is subject to infiltration by Iran (which tried to overthrow the Saudis during the hajj to Mecca during the Khomeini years).  Smaller Gulf fiefdoms like Bahrain already have a majority Shi'ite population.

Therefore Saudi Arabia is facing the same danger of disintegration.  Iran is constantly stirring up ancient hatreds and jealousies in the Arabian Peninsula itself.   The Saud family has only been in power for a hundred years, a smidgen of time in the way Islam counts time.  The Saudis were leveraged into power during World War I, when the Brits sent in Lawrence of Arabia to stir up an Arabian revolt against the Ottoman Turks.  Both the Saudis and the Hashemites royals were elevated to power as puppets of the British Empire.

Iran has always lusted to control the Arabian Peninsula, not just for its oil, but for its twin holy cities, Mecca and Medina.  Once Iran infiltrates and subverts the Arabs to overthrow the Saudi regime, they will be the protectors of the hajj pilgrimage, mandated as one of the primary duties of every Muslim.  Iran will then swing overwhelming power in the Muslim world.  At this time only 20% of Muslims follow Shi'ism.  Give the mullahs all that oil clout, plus Mecca and Medina, and they might overturn Sunni control and power throughout the Muslim world.

The biggest risk of Obama's community organizing shenanigans is therefore a regional war between Sunni imperialism (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Libya) and Shi'ite imperialism (Iran, Syria, and Lebanon).  As soon as Iran goes nuclear, the Saudis and Egyptians have arranged to import nuclear weapons from Pakistan.  A regional Sunni-Shi'ite war might therefore escalate very quickly.

Five years ago Obama promised a Muslim resurgence in the world in his speech from Al Azhar University in Cairo; in fact, he quickly ordered the president of Egypt, Hozni Mubarak, to resign in favor of the much more radical Muslim Brotherhood.

(The Moobs have multiple agents of influence in this administration and in Hillary's campaign, in the person of Huma Abedin, former editor of a Muslim Sisterhood magazine who was publicized as Hillary's closest aide at the State Dept.)

In sum, with the connivance of the Obama Administration, Iran has come out victorious so far.  That outcome may have something to do with the fact that Valerie Jarrett, Obama's alter ego, was born in Iran.

The mullahs now have almost everything they want: Israel is surrounded by the Shi'ite Crescent, with tens of thousands of missiles and rockets ranging from Iran itself to Syria and Lebanon (controlled by Iran's proxy terror group, Hezb'allah).

But the mullahs are totalitarians, and they want it all: Jerusalem, Mecca, Medina, and the biggest oil source in the world, in the Arabian Peninsula.

Iran and the Arabs are divided theologically (each side considers the others to be a heretical sect against the one, true faith, a capital crime in the Muslim world).  The Arabs are ethnically different from the Persians.  Before the rise of Islam, the Persian Empire lorded it over much of the Middle East, with a sophisticated civilization never achieved by desert tribes.  In the first generations after Muhammed, Muslim jihadists swept out of Arabia and conquered both the Persian Empire and the Byzantine (Christian) Empire of North Africa and contemporary Turkey.

Such religious, racial, linguistic, political, dynastic and emotional fissures run very, very deep in the Muslim world.

No wonder the Saudis are shaking in their sandals, watching their ancient Persian enemies rise to power only minutes away from their shores, as the rocket flies.  And not just the Saudis, but also the Egyptians, who are afraid of their own Muslim Brotherhood, Obama's allies whom he keeps trying to empower in Egypt, Jordan, and the rest.

In the Benghazi scandal we found out that the United States, in the person of Ambassador Stevens, was actually supplying arms to an estimated 60,000 Al Qaeda rebels in Syria.  Why? The answer is the Shi'ite Crescent of Iran, Syria, and Lebanon.  Al Qaeda rebels in Syria are Sunni Muslims, while the Assad dictatorship in Syria is Shi'ite.  Naturally, the Saudi Sunnis have done everything in their power to slice the Shi'ite Crescent (Iran, Syria, Lebanon) in half.  The Saudis have therefore sponsored and armed murderous AQ rebels, who literally decapitated children in the village of Maloula, where the language of Jesus is still spoken, as we saw in iPhone photos that flashed around the internet.  Killing Christians and Jews is what AQ does best, as Americans should have learned after 9/11/01.  But in a pinch they will also kill Shi'ites, like the Assad regime in Syria.

When Ansar al Shari'a, an AQ-linked group, killed our ambassador and four other Americans in Benghazi, it was essentially a corrupt arms deal gone wrong.  The United States colluded with France and other European countries to overthrow Gadhafi in Libya, with Ambassador Stevens acting as the point man.  Stevens, who is a CIA plant under State Department cover, then worked to smuggle Gadhafi's vast arms supplies to the Sunni rebels in Syria.  That plot failed, because nobody can make a reliable agreement with the AQ's, who are themselves sliced and diced in the usual way of the Muslim world.  Ansar al-Sharia therefore decided to burn out the Americans at the Benghazi arms depot, and, according to some reports, steal tens of thousands of MANPAD anti-aircraft missiles for their own use.

Obama spun many layers of lies and distractions to cover up Benghazi, which occurred only weeks before the presidential election.  The US media colluded in a massive cover-up, keeping American voters in the dark during the most crucial election of our lifetimes.

If there is any consolation in the most bizarre and unnecessary conspiracy this country has ever engaged in, it is that Obama has met his foreign policy nemesis.  Domestically ObamaCare is teetering on the brink of failure.  In foreign policy every government in the world has been watching Obama's high wire juggling act in the Middle East in horrified fascination.  And the Saudis are now reaping the just harvest of anti-American and anti-Israel hatred they have sown throughout the Middle East and the world since 1973.  If Iran conquers the Arabian Peninsula the Saudis will have no one to blame but themselves.

Obama still hopes to come out of this nuclear brinkmanship smelling like a rose, and if the worldwide media keep covering up the facts, he might still do so.  But all the dominos have to fall the right way, and in the newly "organized" Middle East, the chances of that happening are slim to none.

ISRAEL ,THE UNITED STATES AND THE AMERICAN JEWISH COMMUNITY ALL BETRAYED JONATHAN POLLARD

Previously, I sent you "Pollard Defenders Vindicated--After 25 years, the CIA has declassified documents that show Jonathan Pollard never spied on the U.S. for Israel" by Lee Smith December 20, 2012

*Judge Aubrey Eugene Robinson Jr.  illegally conducted back channel communications with the prosecution who inflamed Judge Robinson by telling him (falsely) that Pollard had provided security information to South Africa.

     *  Judge Robinson sentenced Jonathan Pollard to life in prison in 1987, claiming that information provided by Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger showed that Pollard's spying on behalf of Israel had caused significant damage to American security interests.

*Pollard's Defense (regardless of the level of their security clearances ) were never given access to these charges nor afforded an opportunity to rebut them. As individual accusations leaked out they have been all successfully rebutted.

*Now,  After 25 years, the CIA has declassified documents that show Jonathan Pollard never spied on the U.S. for Israel. the CIA report reveals that Pollard did not procure secrets about the United States—nor did Israel ask him to. The intelligence he provided his Israeli handlers consisted of the information that the United States had acquired concerning Arab and other Middle Eastern states.

The  multitude of  public leak and sentensing memo accusations against Pollard have proved to be false. He did not compromise agents. He did not compromise means and sources .  He did not compromise any information relating to US  forces.  All the information he transmitted related to Arab equipment, capabilities, etc. In other words, very simply, he compromised “Defense information” but did not spy against the United States.

*What adds to this outrage is that the Obama administration knows full well the facts and has elected explicitly to continue Jonathan Pollard's imprisonment in order to keep him as Dennis Ross described as a “bargaining chip”.

I have had no connection ever with Jonathan Pollard or with his prosecution. As a matter of fact, I was not a close follower of the case in the media. My original reaction was “he is a traitor, lock him up and throw away the key.” Also, I was extremely  upset at Israeli for utilizing a Jewish agent which gives the anti-Semites and state, CIA, etc. (who are plentiful) to voice the mantra of “dual loyalty”.

Israeli Spying: The Mother of all Scandals }

I was involved in the Kadish case  for the DOD and DOJ. They assumed that every document he ever read was compromised. Thus I reviewed the 200+ documents that he had requisitioned. Nearly all were at the official use level. All dealt with logistical support details. None were sensitive. The only documents on "nuclear materials” dealt with the mating of the physical missiles with the aircraft systems (which wire was attached to which wire and which hose was attached to which hose.) Any connection to Pollard was far-fetched. Kadish pled guilty in a deal that permitted him to keep all his retirement and benefits and involved no jail time or other civil penalties. At that time I wrote an article which was published on this case
THIS SENSATIONAL (NOT CORRECT) ARTICLE WAS TYPICAL: Ex-U.S. Army engineer Kadish pleads guilty to spying for Israel Kadish charged with slipping classified documents about nuclear weapons to Israeli Consulate employee in 1980s. By The Associated Press | Dec. 30, 2008

I am also familiar with the AIPAC/Larry Franklin case. Franklin (not Jewish) was accused of providing “top  secret policy materials” to AIPAC (and presumably to Israel). As there was no US policy at that time---we were all circulating drafts attempting to influence US policy--nothing was classified. In fact, I received drafts containing much more “defense materials” from Robert Gates and from Zbigniew  Brzezinski .
The judge eventually dismissed all charges against Stephen Rosen  and Keith  Weissman.  The judge lashed into the persecution for their underhanded and unethical behavior.
Legal experts said the government was wrong in the first place for trying to criminalize the kind of information horse-trading that long has occurred in Washington.
THE BASIC QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE POLLARD CASE ARE:
WHAT WAS  HE ACTUALLY INDICTED FOR? WHAT WAS HE ACTUALLY GUILTY OF?
In a recent article appearing on-line Prof. Angelo Codevilla, a staff member of the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time Jonathan Pollard was arrested is quoted:“Having been intimately acquainted with the materials that Pollard passed and with the sources and methods by which they were gathered, I would be willing to give expert testimony that Pollard is guilty of neither more nor less than what the indictment alleges.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger (long regarded by Israel as antagonistic toward the Jewish state),intimidated to the court that Pollard gave information to the Soviets.  The assumption was  that "means and sources "information was being transmitted to the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union fell we found out that our assumptions that the Soviet Union had penetrated Israeli intelligence and that US intelligence going to Israel was in fact ending up in the Soviet Union WERE FALSE.(Later, we came to learn that this was the doing of Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames.)
WHAT IS THE APPROPRIATE AND COMPARABLE PUNISHMENT FOR HIS ACTUAL TRANSGRESSIONS?During the same time period  a spy caught working for Saudi Arabia (a Navy officer named Schwarz-not Jewish- where the intelligence did in fact go to an enemy power-and was very harmful to US military interests) received a dishonorable discharge and nothing further as punishment

THE BOTTOM LINE IS: DO YOU FEEL THAT POLLARD  SHOULD BE RELEASED?

ALSO, DO YOU FEEL THAT IT IS DESPICABLE THAT A PROMINENT JEWISH MEMBER OF THE OBAMA TEAM HAS PUBLICLY ADVOCATED THAT POLLARD  NOT BE RELEASED BUT RATHER THAT HE STILL  BE HELD AS A “BARGAINING CHIP”.One of the major reasons for incarcerating Pollard-and thus holding him as hostage-was the widespread belief (spread by Aldrich Ames to cover his own tracks) that there was a 2nd Israeli mole inside the CIA. U.S. officials  repeatedly, publicly claimed that Pollard was not working alone when he spied for Israel and  the United States therefore  should make Pollard's release conditional on Israel acknowledging this"BASELESS." claim.

Now follows the 2 articles I mentioned.

 1.     Israel Betrayed Pollard, Too
Sidney Zion - NY Daily News -June 22, 2000
A sensational revelation about the Jonathan Pollard case surfaced this week. When the Israeli government agreed to return the purloined papers obtained through its American spy, the United States government agreed that it would not use the stuff to convict Pollard.
But as soon as the documents got to Washington, the FBI slammed them in Pollard's face, forcing a guilty plea that resulted in a life sentence .
Until the other day, Pollard didn't know about the deal brokered by then-Prime Minister Shimon Peres and Secretary of State George Shultz in 1985, right after Pollard's arrest. But now, a 1987 report by a Knesset committee chaired by Abba Eban has finally seen the light of day. And it shows a dark picture of denial and deceit — a virtual triple-cross — that has doomed Pollard for 15 years, with no end in sight.
Without the documents, our government had no real case against Pollard. When he was caught trying to get into the Israeli Embassy in Washington, he had only those few papers he could hold. The U.S. interest was to retrieve the mass of documents that had been passed, and Israel was more than willing to give them back. Shultz wanted to keep this terribly embarrassing situation between allies as limited as possible.
But Israel needed certain conditions: Pollard's handlers must be granted immunity from prosecution in America, and Pollard would not be convicted based on the purloined papers. Immunity was granted to the three Israeli agents who had brought Pollard, a Navy intelligence officer, into the deal. There would not be immunity for Pollard, but the documents returned to America would not be used against him.
When the FBI, against this agreement, hit Pollard with the papers, which had his fingerprints all over them, he felt he had no choice but to plead guilty.
The Justice Department offered him a "substantial sentence," which was understood to be no more than 10 years in prison. No other spy for an allied government had received more than four years.
But an hour before sentencing, then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger delivered a memo to the trial judge proclaiming Pollard "the worst spy in American history." He accused him of treason, a charge never made by the prosecution because it couldn't be made, since Israel is an ally of America.
Thus, Pollard became the first defendant in history to receive the maximum after pleading guilty. And on a secret affidavit the public has not yet seen. And against an American guarantee that what he stole would not be used against him. If this be due process. ...
Where were the Israelis while this was going on? They never advised Pollard that America had agreed to keep the documents out of the case. He pleaded guilty without knowing this, and when his appeal came up, he still didn't know.
Indeed, until two years ago, the Israeli government refused to confirm that he was their agent. They protected his handlers but left him out in the cold.
And all the while, until this day, the CIA has been spreading stories that make him a danger to America — without a scintilla of evidence to support it. "If you only knew what we know" — that's the mantra.
Well, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) finally got access to these files. "I saw nothing new," Schumer said. "They ought to let him go."
What's new is that they knew it all the time, America and Israel.

2.     The Truth About the Pollard Affair – The Eban Report

By Dr. Aaron Lerner – The Jerusalem Post – June 20, 2000
I would like to share some shocking information that recently came to my attention regarding the Pollard Affair. This new information not only makes the already-powerful arguments for Pollard’s immediate release just that much stronger. It also raises serious questions about US-Israel relations and provides further evidence of Israel’s own role in undermining Pollard’s position.
I recently obtained a copy of the May 26, 1987 Eban Commission Report on the Pollard Affair that was prepared by a subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Knesset.
I was astounded to find the following passage under the heading “The Decision to Cooperate with the US.”
  1. Israel agreed to return the American documents it obtained through Pollard, but “conditioned the cooperation on the granting of immunity to the three persons involved in the affair and on the consent of the Americans to the fact that the documents returned would not be used to convict Pollard… ” That’s right. The United States agreed NOT to use the documents in the case against Pollard.
How important were those documents to the case?
Let’s look at what Assistant U.S. Attorney John R. Fisher wrote on page 10 in the June 17, 1987 “Government’s Opposition to Motion to Reduce Sentence”: “Cooperation was not forthcoming in this case until several months after defendant’s arrest. Indeed, defendant agreed to enter a guilty plea and cooperate only after government attorneys and investigators returned from Israel with additional evidence of defendant’s guilt.”
Not only did the Americans break their agreement with Israel and use the documents to prosecute Pollard, the government’s own lawyer states for the record that Pollard pleaded guilty thanks to those documents.
America broke its word and Pollard went to prison.
And what about Israel? In the same section of the Eban Report, which was written just after Pollard was sentenced, three members of the Eban Commission condemned Israel’s return of the documents and concluded,
” …These documents constituted the basis for the conviction and life sentence that Pollard received, in spite of… an American commitment not to use the documents against Pollard.”
When Israel handed over the documents to the US in 1985, it did not advise Jonathan Pollard of the American agreement not to use the documents against him. So he had no way to keep them out of court.
In the summer of 1991, four years after the Eban Report was issued, as Jonathan Pollard prepared to appeal his case, he still did not know that that evidence had no place in the courtroom.
Not only did Israel provide America the gun to shoot Pollard, their silence denied Pollard the opportunity to defend himself against it.
Israel did not stop there.
When Jonathan Pollard signed the plea agreement, he was explicitly defined in the plea agreement as an official agent of the Israeli Government, a status that makes clear Israel’s obligations to him.
After Pollard signed the plea agreement, that passage was crossed out with two different colors of ink by two different representatives – an American and an Israeli.
So, rather than stand by their agent when the US violated an agreement not to use the documents Israel had returned to America, and press for the deal to be honored ex post facto, Israel opted to turn its back on Pollard.
The severity of Jonathan Pollard’s sentence bears no relationship to either the terms of the plea bargain or the crimes he was prosecuted for.
From day one, proponents of the sentence have defended their position by claiming that the damage assessment in Pollard’s classified file is so shocking that it justifies the sentence.
For years this “if you only knew what we know” argument has provided refuge for people who, for whatever reason, did not want to help put an end to this grossly disproportionate punishment.
But now we do know.
New York Senator Charles Schumer did not rely on what others claimed was in the classified Pollard file. He saw it himself. And after reviewing the “if you only knew what we know” file, he revealed the shocking truth – There was nothing to know! That’s right. Schumer, after seeing the file itself, states that there is nothing in it to justify the harsh and unprecedented sentence that Jonathan Pollard is serving.
This revelation raises several questions:
One: Why did the US intelligence community misrepresent the damage caused by the Pollard affair?
Two: What does this tell us about the nature of US – Israel intelligence (and other) relations?
Three: What does this tell us about the senior actors – such as US President Bill Clinton – who most certainly must have been aware that the “if you only knew what we know” line was just that – a line.
Hillary Clinton says that she is “open to learning more (about the Pollard case) and thinking harder about what I think is the right thing to do.” Well the right thing to do today, with the “if you only knew what we know” line excuse demolished, is to set Pollard free. And that’s today – not tomorrow.
Dr. Aaron Lerner is a commentator and Middle East news analyst. He is CEO of IMRA, an independent news service based in Israel.
Pollard hopes to see Ariel Sharon one more time – Gil Hoffman – The Jerusalem Post
  1. The associate said Pollard’s interest in Sharon was connected to the 1987 Eban Commission Report, which was the Knesset’s official investigation of the Pollard Case. The report revealed Sharon’s role right after Pollard’s arrest.
“Sharon was the only one who fought tooth and nail with then-prime minister Shimon Peres and the rest of the cabinet, arguing with them not to return the US documents that Pollard had provided to Israel,” the associate said. “Sharon warned that doing so would endanger the agent’s life.”
According to the Eban Report, Sharon argued that Israel must first rescue Pollard and then do whatever else was deemed necessary.
He was adamant that Israel do nothing until the safe return of its agent was first assured.
The Eban Report indicated that two other ministers supported Sharon’s position, but he was out-voted and Peres’s promise to then-US secretary of state George Schultz to return the documents was ratified. The report also confirmed that the documents were the only evidence the US had on Pollard.
Without them, they would not have had enough of a case against him.
When the cabinet voted to return the documents, the report said Sharon declared: “You have just killed the agent!”
